"For the past couple of years I have been using a wonderful teaching resource entitled "Fun With Composers". This is a Canadian based resource which highlights some of the most iconic musical pieces composed by the most recognized composers in our history. This resource allows students to experience classical music in a fun, interactive way through storytelling, art, literacy and movement. Students are constantly asking me to introduce new composers just so they can use this material! For the next little while the creator of this resource (Deborah Ziolkoski) has allowed for some of her material to be shared by music specialists across the globe online, free of charge...I strongly recommend checking out the lessons and materials provided below. Your child will thank you and keep "bugging" you for more..." Enjoy!!!

"Welcome to another week of musical adventures! This week I'd like to give you the opportunity to unplug a little bit from your devices. This week you will find downloadable and printable files that your child can use to reinforce or extend their musical knowledge. Feel free to explore one or all of the files attached. All of these materials have been taken from the MusicPlay Online website. From now until at least August 2020 anyone can access this site for FREE. You will no longer require a student username or password to access this site. As I have previously mentioned, this site contains a plethora of excellent educational music activities, songs, videos and much, much more. I highly recommend it!"

"Throughout our school year the main musical instrument we have been exploring in and out of class has been the human voice. It is the MOST accessible and user-friendly instrument we have! Some of you may disagree with that last statement BUT let me encourage you that EVERYONE can SING! Our improved singing is very much dependent on how much we are working out those muscles. When we go to the gym to work out our bodies we follow routines and exercises that will help us achieve our desired physical goals. Well, with singing there are exercises and activities that we can do achieve vocal success! Some of us have to work harder than others to achieve those goals but they ARE achievable if you put in the work! This week as part of my resource sharing I am providing some vocal activities that you and your child can explore to improve your vocal skills! I am excited to hear what AMAZING singers you will be when we return!"
VOCAL LESSON:
Step 1: Begin with a warm-up that combines physical and vocal techniques. See on my Youtube Section, two vocal warm-ups that are sure to get you started the right way.
Step 2: Explore familiar musical sounds. Your children have been exploring "solfa" which is a musical language used to learn how to read and represent musical pitch. It combines both singing and hand signs to help represent each pitch (musical sound). I have been using a program called "Pitch Hill" to help teach these techniques. You might recognize from the movie "The Sound of Music" the song, "Do-Re-Mi" (lyrics; "Do-a-deer, a female deer, Ray a drop of golden sun...etc."). This song utilizes the solfa pitch system. In MusicPlay online (see resource below) you can access songs, activities and games that will help to develop these musical skills in your child. Here are a few activities to try this week:

Login to Musicplay Online and on the far left hand side of the screen, select solfa practice, and click on "Echo Sing":
Once in Echo Sing, you have the option to choose which solfa pitches you would like to explore:

Another fun way to test your solfa skills is to play a game called Poison Melody! Students LOVE this game...You can find this link at the top of the solfa practice page and click on the icon. Again, you can select which solfa pitches you would like to use.

Step 3: Apply the "solfa" music language to common children's songs. (ex: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - uses La-So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do) Others can be found by searching on MusicPlay online by selecting the "smd or lsmrd, lsfmrd" links on the main homepage. Click and press submit and different songs will be suggested on the left-hand side of the screen.
Speaking of the "Sound of Music", why not put all of that solfa knowledge and hard work to good use... Enjoy singing and performing "Do-Re-Mi" with hand signs and vocal pitches! Enjoy!!!

As an extension I encourage all of you to check out the "Read Hand Signs" and "Read Notation" categories as well in MusicPlay online. Each of these activities help to reinforce each other and will have your children reading music (by pitch) right before your eyes! If you have been checking out the elearning modules you will find that these activities will help to reinforce the skills and concepts being taught within those lessons. Happy Singing!!!

"If you're looking to begin a musical discussion with your kids OR if you are looking to create an opportunity for your children to demonstrate their growing musical vocabulary then here are a few activities that will encourage those discussions in a fun, interactive and creative way..." Attached you will find 3 activities you can do at home: Musical Picture Frames, Musical Story Web and Listen, Roll and Share Musical Conversations. You will find a description of each activity provided below."
Musical Picture Frames:
In this activity students listen to any musical selection they want to! Ask them to imagine that if the music they were listening to was a painting, what would that painting look like? Encourage them to draw that picture in the picture frame provided. When your child is finished ask them why they chose to draw that particular picture? Encourage them to use details they heard in the music to help justify their artistic choices. Happy painting! |

Musical Story Web:
In this activity students will create a comic strip based on the musical selection of their choice. While listening to their music the students will depict a story that has a beginning, middle and end. The music will fuel the imaginative story. This is an extension to the Musical Picture Frame activity. Enjoy! |

Listen, Roll and Share Musical Conversation:
This is a game that you and your child can play together! Simply choose a piece of music to listen to and use the provided dice chart to discuss the musical selection. A fun, easy way to have a musical conversation with your child! Happy listening, rolling and sharing! Here are some elementary musical terms and definitions to help with vocabulary and musical discussions you may have with your child!

"Once you are logged in as a student this site offers excellent "elearning modules" in both English and French that require little to no pre-planning on your part. Scroll down on the far left hand side of the screen and you will see the heading "Online Learning". Click the link and you will find grade specific music lessons that include all of the necessary tools/documents/videos/songs to complete each lesson. Each lesson will build upon the musical skills and concepts your child has been working on all year. You and your child can also access other activities and games on this site which are used to teach, improve and enhance their musical abilities. "This is a highly recommended flash based, animated adventure game where students can explore the 4 instrument families of the orchestra (woodwind, percussion, brass and string) through the music of composer Benjamin Britten. Students will embark on a Safari to discover, locate and gain knowledge about the individual instruments in the orchestra families as they relate to the score of the "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra". There are videos, visual (audio) texts and online activities that students will explore in order to complete the game. You can save your progress throughout and return to your game at any time with your self-created username and password (hint: write down your login info and keep it somewhere so you don't forget!!). A great way for your child and you to learn about orchestral instruments in a fun, engaging and meaningful way! GARAGEBAND APP FOR THE iPAD
This free app entitled "GarageBand" for the ipad offers a great introduction to composition (recording studio feel) for students in the older grades. It can be downloaded through the app store. This free resource provided by the "Fun Music Company" is an easy 4 lesson introduction to the GarageBand app. Your child will be able to compose music using various instruments which they can use to enhance assignments, projects or solely use to rock out at home. Who knows? Maybe we have some aspiring DJ's out there!!!

"For those who do not have access to an ipad for the GarageBand app, this is another free online alternative composition tool for students. They can enter this site and create their own vocal compositions by dragging the desired sound/singer to the place of their choosing. They can record their creations so they can share it with their family and friends. An easy and accessible way to explore, label and create layered music."
MUSICAL COVID-19 RHYTHMS
"Find attached a rhythm building activity for your family to explore. This activity utilizes rhythmic symbols and COVID-19 terminology as a means to create word/phrase compositions. Have fun combining phrases and words into rhythm (syllable) form. Share your work with each other and perhaps create new terminology and rhythmic structures!"
